Green Ghana Day 2024 was celebrated with the inspiring theme, “Growing for a Greener Tomorrow,” focusing on environmental sustainability and the urgent need to combat climate change through reforestation. The Asante Akim North Municipality marked the beginning of this year’s Green Ghana Day with a significant event held at Collins Senior High School, underscoring the importance of community involvement in this national initiative.
The ceremony at Collins SHS was a remarkable gathering of various stakeholders, reflecting a united front in the quest for a greener environment. The event was graced by the presence of the Municipal Coordinating Director, the Municipal Education Director, the Chairman of the Asante Akim North New Patriotic Party (NPP), and representatives from the Forestry Commission and Ghana Fire Service. The Headmaster of Collins SHS, along with the entire student body, actively participated in the day’s activities, showcasing the school’s dedication to environmental conservation.
The Municipal Coordinating Director delivered the keynote address, emphasizing the critical role that every individual and institution plays in protecting and restoring the environment. He highlighted that Green Ghana Day is not just a symbolic event but a practical step towards addressing the environmental challenges facing the nation. He urged all attendees, particularly the youth, to take ownership of the initiative, stressing that the future of Ghana’s environment depends on the actions taken today.
Following the address, the Municipal Education Director spoke on the importance of integrating environmental education into the school curriculum. She noted that educating young people about the significance of tree planting and environmental conservation is crucial for fostering a generation that is conscious of and committed to sustainable practices. She applauded the students of Collins SHS for their enthusiasm and urged them to continue being ambassadors for environmental stewardship.
The Chairman of the Asante Akim North NPP also took the stage to express his support for the Green Ghana initiative. He reiterated the government’s commitment to environmental sustainability and encouraged local communities to actively participate in tree planting exercises, not only on Green Ghana Day but as a continuous effort throughout the year. He mentioned that the party would continue to support such initiatives that align with the nation’s development goals.
A representative from the Forestry Commission provided insights into the technical aspects of tree planting, including the selection of suitable species for the local environment and the importance of aftercare to ensure the survival of the trees. He also highlighted the government’s ongoing efforts to replenish Ghana’s forest cover, which has seen significant depletion over the years due to illegal logging and other environmental pressures.
The involvement of the Ghana Fire Service was particularly noteworthy, as they discussed the role of fire prevention in protecting newly planted trees and existing forests. Their presence underscored the need for a multifaceted approach to environmental conservation, where preventing and controlling forest fires is as crucial as planting new trees.
The Headmaster of Collins SHS expressed his pride in hosting the event and commended the students for their active participation. He noted that the school has always prioritized environmental issues, and the Green Ghana Day event provided an excellent opportunity for students to put their knowledge into practice. The entire student body participated in the tree planting exercise, planting several trees around the school premises and committing to their care and maintenance.
The event concluded with a tree planting ceremony, where all attendees, including students, teachers, and dignitaries, took part in planting various species of trees. The sight of students, teachers, and officials working side by side to plant trees symbolized the collective effort required to achieve the goals of Green Ghana Day.
